Heating and plumbing advice
Answers to common questions about heat pumps, boilers, pipework and leaks.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air or the ground and uses it to heat your home and hot water. It runs on electricity and moves heat rather than burning fuel, so it can deliver more heat than the electricity it uses.
Is a heat pump better than a gas boiler?
It depends on the home. Heat pumps are very efficient but cost more to install, and they work best in well-insulated homes with larger radiators or underfloor heating. A gas boiler is cheaper to fit and works with most existing systems. A survey of your property is the best way to decide.
What do I need to think about before getting a heat pump?
- How well insulated your home is
- Space outside for the unit and space inside for a hot water cylinder
- Whether your radiators and pipework are suitable
- Your running costs and any grants available at the time
What is the difference between combi, system and regular boilers?
A combi boiler heats water on demand and needs no tank, which suits smaller homes. A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder and gives good flow to several bathrooms. A regular boiler needs a cylinder and tanks in the loft, and is common in older homes.
How long does a boiler last?
A boiler usually lasts 10 to 15 years. A yearly service helps catch faults early and keeps it running efficiently.
When should I repair my boiler and when should I replace it?
Repair is usually sensible for a younger boiler with a single fault. Consider replacing it if it is old, breaks down often, loses pressure repeatedly, or your heating bills keep rising. We can look at it and tell you honestly which makes sense.
Why are my radiators cold at the top or the bottom?
Cold at the top usually means trapped air, which bleeding the radiator can fix. Cold at the bottom often points to a build-up of sludge in the system, which may need a system clean.
How can I tell if I have a hidden water leak?
- Damp patches, stains or peeling paint on walls and ceilings
- A water bill that rises with no change in use
- Your boiler pressure dropping regularly
- The sound of running water when everything is off
What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Turn off the main stop tap, switch off electrics near the water if it is safe to do so, open the taps to drain the system, and call us. We offer a 24/7 emergency service.
Why renew old pipework during a renovation?
Old pipes can corrode, leak or restrict flow. Renovation is the easiest time to replace them, because the walls and floors are already open.
